In the New York Times, Steven Millhauser recently wrote about the distinctions between the genre of the short story and the novel. Reading "2666", "it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish Roberto Bolaño's genius from his excess. The book is huge, almost 1,000 pages. But I know exactly when I read the first page of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. It was reported that he was not completely finished writing or editing the novel at the time of his death. Roberto Bolaño died shortly after presenting the first draft of 2666 to his publisher, Anagrama. The wide ranging geography and time frame of 2666 defy easy summary. The bookmark that I use in my copy of 2666 is the Christmas card that my brother wrote to me when he gave me the book. That is the basis for their connection. The first thing I'll say is it took me a very long time to get through this book. Namely, Bolaño's wish was for 2666 to be published in separate volumes, one per year ( I believe). 2666 by Roberto Bolaño (2004) (translated from the spanish by Natasha Wimmer, 2008). 898 pages, Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He was still working on it when he died in 2003. In the first section of Bolano's 2666, the academics have Archembolo's books in common. Part of my four-day holiday weekend has been spent thinking about Roberto Bolaño's 2666. For the past week, I have been walking around, trying to think of what — finally — to say about Roberto Bolaño's novel, 2666. The best blogging experience of my first year at the practice is, by far, the group read of 2666. My review of Roberto Bolaño's monumental posthumous novel 2666 should run on PopMatters sometime soon.
